The Endangered Species(लोपोन्मुख प्रजाति)

The Endangered EncounTer(लोपोन्मुख भेटघाट)

   It is a cold morning in a village in Taplejung. The mist is rolling through the branches. The students going to school are shivering. Manahang and Kumang are trying to keep warm by walking briskly.(ताप्लेजुङको एउटा गाउँमा चिसो बिहानी छ ।

“Look at all this mist. I think it will get colder tonight,” Manahang said.(“यो धुवाँलाई हेर।

“Well! Maybe. But I am more worried about school. We will definitely be late today,” replied Kumang.(“ल!

“Don’t worry, our English teacher will probably come late too. He always does that,” Manahang argued.("चिन्ता नगर्नुहोस्, हाम्रा अंग्रेजी शिक्षक पनि ढिलो आउनेछन्।

“That is true. But I am afraid of our headteacher. He certainly won’t come late,” Kumang showed his uneasiness.("त्यो सत्य हो।

“Hey look! What is that on the road? Looks like an animal,” shouted Manahang.(“हेर!

“Oh, no! It is a red panda. It must be hurt,” replied Kumang. “No, no, it’s moving. I think it will walk away,” said Manahang.("धत्तेरिका!

As the two boys watched the red panda slowly walk across the path. It walked with its usual slow action. The boys watched it as it slowly climbed a tree nearby. It looked at them with its wise old eyes.(दुई केटाहरूले रातो पाण्डालाई बिस्तारै बाटोमा हिंडिरहेको देखे।

Manahang was excited. “Let’s catch it and take it to the school,”(मनाहाङ उत्साहित थिए ।

Kumang was more restrained, “No, we should not ever catch red pandas.”(कुमाङ झनै संयमित भईन्, “होइन, हामीले कहिल्यै रातो पाण्डा समात्नु हुँदैन ।”)

“But why not?” argued Manahang.("तर किन छैन?"
Kumang said, “Because it is one of the endangered animals of our country. We should protect them and the habitat that they live in.”(कुमाङले भने, “किनभने यो हाम्रो देशको लोपोन्मुख जनावर मध्येको एक हो ।

“Really!” Manahang showed his surprise. “I thought only tigers and rhinos were endangered animals.”("साँच्चै!"

“Well,” started Kumang, “there are many animals that are listed as endangered animals. Snow leopard, elephant and river dolphin are also on the list of endangered animals among others. Most of these animals will probably become extinct without human help”(कुमाङले सुरु गरे, “त्यहाँ धेरै जनावरहरू छन् जुन लोपोन्मुख जनावरहरूको सूचीमा छन्।

“Wow! I had no idea. What should we do to protect them?” asked Manahang.("वाह!

“First we need to make people aware about how special these animals are. They have to be told not to hunt or catch the animals on the endangered list. We shouldn’t destroy their habitat either,” replied Kumang.(“पहिले हामीले मानिसहरूलाई यी जनावरहरू कत्तिको विशेष छन् भनेर सचेत गराउनु पर्छ।

Manahang said, “I don’t know about the animals but one thing is for sure. The forest will certainly disappear if we cut down the trees at the rate that we are doing now.”(मनाहाङले भने, ‘मलाई जनावरको बारेमा थाहा छैन तर एउटा कुरा पक्का छ ।

“It is difficult. But it is also something that needs to be done. Ummm… we have reached the school now. Do you have any excuse?”

“Don’t you worry,” said Manahang. “We will tell the story about how we found a red panda on the way to school. That will be some story.”(“तिमी चिन्ता नगर”, मनाहाङले भने ।

A smile crept on Kumang’s face and he said, “I’m sure that excuse will work,” as they entered the school.(कुमाङको अनुहारमा मुस्कान आयो र स्कुल भित्र पस्दा उसले भन्यो, “मलाई ढुक्क छ कि बहानाले काम गर्छ ।)

        R = River Dolphin
        R = Rhinoceros
Now, develop a way to remember something on your own.

8.        Writing

The following is a sample piece of writing to describe an animal. Choose any of the endangered animal and write a few paragraphs describing it.

“A dog is man’s best friend.”It may have some truth, but dogs are not the only animal people enjoy with. For many people, a cat is their best friend.("कुकुर मानिसको सबैभन्दा राम्रो साथी हो।"

In the first place, people enjoy the company of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? Cats generally look happy and playful when they feel safe and being loved. If irritated, they go bonkers. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Cats can also be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behaviour or perform tricks.(पहिलो स्थानमा, मानिसहरू बिरालाहरूको संगतको आनन्द लिन्छन्।

In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats don’t even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet life. Cats also don’t often have “accidents.” Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this.(दोस्रो स्थानमा, बिरालोहरू घरको सभ्य सदस्य हुन्।

Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as house pet is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are content to go about their usual activities until their owners return.(अन्तमा, घरपालुवा जनावरको रूपमा बिरालाहरूको सबैभन्दा आकर्षक विशेषता भनेको उनीहरूको हेरचाहको सहजता हो।

People who have small living quarters or less time for pet care should appreciate these characteristics of cats. However, many people who have plenty of space and time still opt to have a cat because they love the cat personality. In many ways, cats are the ideal house pet.(घरपालुवा जनावरको हेरचाहको लागि सानो बस्ने क्वार्टर वा कम समय भएका मानिसहरूले बिरालाहरूको यी विशेषताहरूको कदर गर्नुपर्छ।
